I’ve been working with Mill Creek to come up with creative ways to leverage their content in digital formats beyond DVD with the iPhone as the first mobile platform.

Scream Scenes was released in the fall of 2009 and featured audio and video clips from 16 of the most frighteningly fantastic classic horror films which can be found in Mill Creek Entertainment’s Horror Classics 50 Movie MegaPack.

If you tap on the any of the 16 movie icons, a short audio clip of a “classic scream” will play. If you touch and hold one of the icons, the video segment from the movie showing the “classic scream” will play.

Sam Kinison

Our second collaborative project was the Sam Kinison Scream Board, which follows the same idea of Scream Scenes, audio and video content from a collection of Sam Kinison DVDs. If you are not familiar with Sam Kinison, let’s just say his sense of humor can be a little shocking. If you are okay with Sam’s no holds barred approach (the app has a 17+ rating) his standup comedy makes for some great laughs.

The Sam Kinison app is free, if you are up for some outrageous fun, give it a try.

I am looking for 10-15 people who own an iPhone or iPod touch to give the application a try. I’ll create a build specifically for your device or provide a promo code to download the latest version.

What I ask for in return is a thorough run through of the app, testing the streaming speed and performance, as well as exercising the overall UI.

The 1.1 release was the “Holiday Edition” and added various winter and holiday themed cartoons including the original (short) version of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer from 1948 and a number of sing-alongs including the old stand-by, Jingle Bells.

Cartoons to Go Version 1.2

With version 1.2 I’ve added another 12 cartoons including a few classics such as Woody Woodpecker, Mighty Mouse and Heckle and Jeckle. The total playing time of all cartoons is now over 11 hours.

No Frills UI

The application that is now available on the App Store has little similarity to the original application that I submitted. The reason being, as the amount of time involved to continually make changes to get approved increased, the capabilities of the user interface decreased.

So what took so long you ask? In a nutshell, I think it was all about questions on copyright and rights to publish the cartoons. I have no beef with that, however, I wish we could of cut to the chase much earlier in the review process. Honestly, I would rather get all this stuff clarified up front versus after the fact. With that said, it is frustrating for nine months to go by with nothing to show for all the time and effort that went into the original work.

Today, the interface is nothing more than a tableview with a long scrolling list of entries, one for each cartoon:

This is a custom tableview with a transparent background – I wrote about a similar idea in this post Creating Unique Looking Tables with Custom Cells. Clicking on a row starts the movie player and away you go.

If we get any amount of momentum (read sales) with the application, I have some interesting ideas for the UI, following in the same vein as vintage cartoons, more on that another time…

Talk about working on a fun development project. And testing, come on, what’s not to like. The good stuff in this app is the audio and the graphics (nice work Bryce and Jimi). We are going with the simple is good approach as far as the application, that along with the versatility of the word – is there a situation where “dude” won’t work?

If you’ve got a dude phrase for the next release, pass it on, dude.
