I recently received the SportGrip iPhone 3G case from Marware. With a velvety smooth feel and jet black color, for those interested in a full protection case, this one deserves a close look.

Included in the package are the case, protective film, micro-fiber cloth to clean the screen and instructions for applying the film. The film goes on very nice if you follow the steps outlined. However, one word of caution, if you need to restart from the beginning to apply the film (typically because it’s not on straight) use caution how you handle the film. It will easily pick up dust which can end up between the film and the screen. Given the film is shiny, this can make small spec stand out on the screen.

The SportGrip is a well designed case, with attention given to the details. For example, the holes over the camera, mute switch and around the screen consist of a nice tappered edge. This makes for a very nice, clean look.

On the case that I am evaluating, there is a very small gap near the top, where the case meets the screen (see the figure above). Although this is trivial if the case does not stretch over time, it is an opportunity for dirt to creep in underneath the cover. A tighter fit across the top would ease my mind.
One downside of the silicon case (or the fact that it’s jet black, or both) is that it tends to pick up and show dust. However, for the most part, it brushes clean.

As a developer of iPhone applications, you’ll appreciate that the adapter hardware is not covered (see the figure above). If you spend any amount of time downloading and testing/demoing applications onto an iPhone, you know what I am getting at here.
All around, an exceptionally nice case. Here’s the final run down:
Pro:
- 100% silicone, smooth, almost silky texture
- Full phone protection
- Good value for the price (case, protective film and micro-fiber cloth for cleaning screen)
Con:
- Shows/gathers dust
- Concerns about the case fit (minor concern if the case does not stretch with time)
Price: $19.99
Final Grade: A – Highly recommended
